Two Distant Lands
Eggs for sale in Spar grocery store.
Today's post is definitely going to be mainly bragging... Look at all those eggs! On Saturday I went with Mary to Spars, a chain grocery store in South Africa. It's always super busy on the weekends. When I passed the egg section I was reminded of home. A little before I left the egg shortage in America began I thought it was funny to see all the eggs on four different shelves not only fully stocked but also on sale. Meanwhile, at home, it costs a fortune to get eggs that are rarely on the shelf. I love grocery shopping on the weekend and seeing the different types of brands and comparing prices. Every tourist should visit at least one grocery store during their vacation.
Kids playing the African version of Duck Duck Goose with the visitors.
This weekend two visitors came from the Netherlands to visit Melkhoutfontein and help with Dreamcatchers programs. They were very friendly and loved playing with the kids. Because they spoke dutch it was easier for them to understand Afrikaans since the language originated from the latter. Saturday night they hosted a Brie, which is the equivalent of a barbeque in America. Some of the kids wanted to dance to the songs we had learned during our rehearsals for the production. I'm so happy that they enjoy the dances! We ate hot dogs, salad, and chicken wings, the kids loved it. At the end of the Brie, I ended up in a game of tag and watched the day end with another beautiful sunset.
Frans taking a walk through his township!
Frans has been a dreamcatcher for a very long time! We happened upon him during my photo scavenger hunt for one of my volunteer tasks. I asked if I could take his photo to send to Anthea (my mentor who has known Frans for a very long time) while she's away. Frans and his family were homeless and living in extremely poor conditions when he Met Anthea, the founder of Dreamcatcher South Africa 30 years ago. His mother Suzan (Sues) and his siblings all lived in Soeterus a township that was developed in Melkhoutfontein. When he found Dreamcatcher he dove into the workshops and was a huge help in the gardens growing cucumbers, spinach, and potatoes! He also participated in waste management training and activities as an avid recycler. Frans now lives in Heuningkloof where he continues to grow vegetables and makes a habit of composting his food waste. He is very smart, both intelligent intellectually and emotionally. Even though Frans is physically challenged he makes sure to walk every day. He's a very worldly person and never lets challenges get in his way!
Post Makeover <3
On Sunday my new friends came over and gave me a princess makeover! They even accessorized with jewelry my best friend from home made me. The girls love playing with my hair and experimenting with the makeup I brought. Besides makeovers, we've been teaching each other our native languages, and dancing to the songs I've taught. We also walk and race each other up and down the street. This Sunday we took a walk to catch the sunset, I enjoy sharing the things I love with the people I love.
